WONDERBOOM national airport

Over the past two years, Wonderboom Airport has been constantly busy upgrading to a new level. The upgrading is done according to Civil Aviation's requirements.

During the past few months, two ATM facilities were installed, new paving was laid, shades were put up in the parking area, engine test facilities for aeroplanes were built and internal roads were resealed.

A project that ensures sufficient capacity for emergency water provision to the fire brigade was also completed recently. Sewerage has been upgraded and a tender for upgrading the whole water network of the airport is currently being considered.

According to Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS), who control the air traffic, aircraft movement has increased to such an extent that Wonderboom Airport is now the third busiest airport in South Africa. Last year, the airport also applied for the reinstatement of its international status. Although the Department of Transport is still waiting for the inputs of other parties, it did point out potential shortcomings some weeks ago. Airport management is currently addressing these shortcomings.

The City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality's city development strategy serves as a basis for the development of Wonderboom Airport: the airport is being developed to serve as a strategic catalyst project through which the private sector will invest several million rands. The Council is currently considering a policy that will enable airport tenants to initiate new airport developments, which policy will also include a user-friendly lease contract.

During the air show of April 2005, Wonderboom Airport demonstrated what type of aircraft it can accommodate, what the airport is able to do and where it is heading.
